First update
Here comes the first update of the game!
Since the release, I decided to spend some time improving the design, the gameplay, and also the codebase to make it cleaner and more structured. This update includes the following:
- Added a feature that allows you to hold a movement key, making the piece continue moving in that direction at a fixed interval.
- Implemented the 7-Bag randomizer for spawning pieces. This provides a more structured randomization system and makes the game behave much more like other games in the genre.
- Improved the UI by introducing a proper theme with different button variations. Primary actions are now easier to spot, and toggle buttons are more readable.
- Refactored the input system by moving the key binding logic into a dedicated Input Manager, making the code cleaner and separating responsibilities.
- Fixed a bug where pressing ESC to pause the game could rapidly toggle the Pause Menu because the input was being handled incorrectly while other inputs were occurring at the same time.
- You can now use ESC to close the Options and How to Play panels from both the Main Menu and the Pause Menu, instead of relying only on the Back button.
I'm really happy that I kept my word and moved these improvements into feature updates instead of delaying the initial release. Even while working on this update, it was very tempting to keep adding more features and bug fixes before publishing it.
Instead, I'm trying to follow an approach where I define a set of tasks, complete them, and then actually release them. I still have a lot to learn about deciding how to group features into updates, but that's something that will come with experience. Right now, my goal is to define a clear scope for each release, finish it, and ship it instead of continuously expanding the task list.
With that in mind, here are the features I'm currently working on for the next update:
- High score system.
- Music and sound effects, together with a Music Manager and volume controls.
- Improving the gameplay background and other UI elements to better match the overall visual theme.
- Improving the Options menu to make key rebinding clearer and easier to use.
I'm writing these down both to let everyone know what to expect next and as a promise to myself to focus only on these features for the next release (plus any bug fixes that might come up).
Thanks so much to everyone who played the game and to everyone taking the time to read these updates.
